To improve any of your drawings, you'll need to understand and evaluate this drawing first. It can be incredibly challenging to be objective about your own drawing as it is often difficult to see the mistakes in a drawing you have been staring at for hours. If you had seen the faults earlier, you would have fixed them!
It is consequently not worthwhile to try to assess a drawing too soon after you have completed it or while it is right in front of you. Get up, walk around, have a cup of coffee and then go back and look at it and try if you can locate something new. Try keeping your drawing away for some weeks or even months and then come back and give it a glance.
Reflect about why you draw. What is the definition of a good drawing for you? Must it be realistic to be good? Or could a drawing that assisted you to get rid of some nervousness also be a 'good' drawing?
If you feel as though a drawing just isn't working visually then reconsider the rules of composition (for example) and find if you have missed out anything that could be the solution to a good drawing.
You can also be experienced if you evaluate your own drawings by asking knowledgeable people whom you trust to be honest to evaluate your drawings. See how their comments line up with your thoughts and enquire about sections in your drawings that you are unsure about and then take their advice.
There are several things you should particularly notice to find ways for improvising an existing drawing.
You can be definite that the sections of your page uncovered in drawing are spotless and contain no smudge. You can lift any smudges with a putty rubber (also known as a kneadable eraser).
If the composition can be bettered by cropping a little ( only a little) on one side then attempt that.
If your sketch is very dark and isn't showing a wide range of tones then try bringing out some highlights with your putty eraser.
If your drawing is too light then try supplementing with some additional shading.
In an ideal situation, you will notice that your drawing is next to perfect and does not need any improvisation at all.
On the other hand, if you end up with a huge list of things you would require to change to better your drawing … then, please: Start again... Honestly, that is probably the most advisable approach you could do as your first sketch will then be considered as a preparatory run and your second (or third or fourth) drawing is almost definite to be much improved.
So follow these guidelines and the collection of your creations will not only grow vastly in quantity but also in quality. And also do not forget to keep your creations stored in a place that is dry, dark and without much dust. This will make sure you can enjoy your creations for a long time. |
