Plan to ward off stopped drains

Break Up plugged waste pipes with this plan

Do you know what the best way to unblock drainage is? Using a plunger is the most effective and speediest way to solve this common household problem. The whole process of unclogging a blocked drain pipe is pretty simple and straightforward. Obviously you shouldn't move the plunger up and down forcefully as this will be ineffective and could make the blockage worse. Place the cup of the plunger exactly over the drain pipe and push it downwards and upwards with short sharp movements that generate suction within the drain pipe and pipe. The suction created with the upward movement will pull back the blockage that is stuck in the drainage of your tub, sink or toilet. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overspill openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.

An alternative for plunger is a chemical waste pipes clearance product, one that uses corrosive chemical to unclog the blockage of the drain pipe. These products should be used only when the plunger has failed to clean out your bathroom drainage. The solutions should be left alone for sometime as they loosen up the clog, then you should pour down hot water into the drainpipe to clear the whole thing out. Use rough clothes that cover your body fully as things could get a bit mucky and some of the strong chemicals may spill on you and burn exposed skin. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. The chemical product comes with specific manufacturer's directions; it is important to read and follow them carefully.

Another thing that you can do, if the plunger doesnt remove the blockage, is to use the pliers and pipe wrench to open the nuts that hold the P-trap in place. Keep a bucket and towel to deal with the mess that will follow. Chrome plated fittings can be protected from scratches by taping up the teeth of the pliers or wrench; that should also give you a firmer grip on the nuts of the trap. You will be able to check the drains pipes P-trap for any stoppages in the pipe opening after you remove it. If you dont find anything on the P-trap, then it means that the problem lies deeper somewhere between the trap and soil stack.

To unclog the toilet, you should use a toilet auger to get at these deep seated blockages. If the problem lies in your tub or sink, a plumbers drainage snake will come in handy. Because of their size and length, drainage snakes are well designed for getting at blockages in small spaces in difficult to reach places. Once the snake has reached the blockage you can twist the adjustable handle which will drill into the obstruction so you can then pull the material out. Once, you have taken out the obstruction, re-fix the P-trap and rinse the drainpipe with hot water to make sure that the entire clog has been removed. Make sure that everything is tight and sealed properly and test the P-trap for leaks.

If all these methods fail then you need to call in a professional plumber. There are some incidents that cannot be resolved by the common householder such as clogs in the soil stack or the sewer service near tree roots or even a broken pipe caused by age or pipe corrosion brought upon by nature or some "mysterious reason", at these times contact a good waste pipes engineer.
