One of the quickest growing and most thrilling niches in computer games is that of flight simulators. Attracting aviation enthusiasts and thrill-seekers, some of these games are now so real that when the player is sitting in the cockpit of the plane of his choice, pulse racing, he can forget that he is sitting at home.
Technology today is advancing at such a rapid pace and an area which is benefiting from this advancement is the of computer games. Flight PC games are becoming more and more lifelike for the players. There are three main components to flight simulators: graphics, sound and the add-ons such as joysticks, etc.
Graphics today generate a visual experience which will amaze even the most doubtful. You will see the cockpit of the aircraft you have selected and through the windows the most accurate landscapes imaginable. More and more games are linked to Google maps and so the area you are flying toward or over looks very real.
The sound effects produced by today's games are also exceptionally realistic. Changes in engine noise, whether propeller-driven or jet propelled aircraft, match your of the power setting. You will hear the rumble of the under-carriage or flaps lowering.
So real it is that if you are in a fighter aircraft your ears might be full of the sounds of battle. If you are flying a passenger plane you will talk with the towers and air traffic controllers and even hear cabin crew making announcements to passengers. Joy sticks and throttles add to the realism. Joy sticks today will shake and vibrate when an aircraft stalls. Of course as you turn and bank your aircraft with your controls, so the horizon and landscape will slant and move through your cockpit windows.
Gone are the days when you bought a flight game for a particular type of aircraft. Today the combination of aircraft type and area in which you are flying are almost inexhaustible. You can choose almost any aircraft type and fly it to or from one of thousands of airports around the world.
Why not fly a DC-3, the workhorse of World War 2, out of a small airport deep in the steaming jungles of Zaire? You can defend Britain against the Luftwaffe over Dover - or bomb London out of an airfield in occupied France. You can fly the length and breadth of continents at the controls of a Jumbo Jet. What about a sleek executive jet from Dubai to Athens or Paris? Feel the adrenaline rush that comes with carrier based take off or landings. You might want to go tank busting in the desert at the controls of an apache attack helicopter.
Whatever you decide, you won't be disappointed with most of the flight simulators obtainable today.
